Description

The idea behind this design was to see how much boat can be squeezed out of a single sheet of plywood 4x8' (1220x2440 mm). The resulting boat is suitable for kids to paddle on ponds or very small lakes. It is an excellent first time father and son project to test and get acquainted with the building method and materials without investing too much. The boat can be built for less than a 80$ CAD (2013) in a couple of weekends. Max. beam is 33" (830 mm) which is about the most that can be obtained without sacrificing too much freeboard. I tried to keep both transoms as much as possible out of the water to reduce drag and turbulence. Easily car topped by one person this little "Mickey Mouse" is always available for a quick paddle. The weight is around 27 lbs (12kg). The builder can make his own paddle and seat. Dimensions are on the plans. Here is a list of the materials required:

Here is the bill of materials required:

  • Exterior grade plywood 4x8' (1220x2440 mm), ¼" (6 mm) thick - 1 sheet;
  • Fiberglass tape 3"(75 mm) wide by 6 oz.(200 gr/sq.m) - 8 yards(7 m);
  • Epoxy resin - 1/2 gallon (1.75L) plus hardener;
  • Others - bread flour, chip brushes, rollers, fairing compound or filler, gloves, primer, paint, sandpaper;

Plans package consists of 5 pages - 3 pages of drawings (metric or imperial) and 2 pages of instructions. After payment is processed you will receive an e-mail with a download link. Plans in imperial units are set up to print on letter size paper at the convenience of your home printer. Metric plans are set up to print on A4 size paper.
